VTOS – Returning to Education
Full Time Educational Opportunities for Unemployed Adults
Courses:
What is VTOS?
VTOS means “Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme”. VTOS gives unemployed adults the opportunity of returning to full time education and remain in benefit.
VTOS APPLICANTS
Applicants must be:
- aged 21 or over;
- unemployed for at least six months;
- in receipt of social welfare benefits i.e.Unemployment Benefit, Unemployment Assistance, Lone Parent’s
Allowance, Disability Allowance or Benefit, Invalidity Benefit, Dependent Spouse Benefit, Job Initiative Schemes, Credits, FÁS Schemes.

VTOS…THE FACTS
Take up the VTOS challenge and immediately the benefits to
you are:
- getting back to education
- payments equal to your social welfare benefits
- lunch and travel allowances
- no fees
- free books
- a bonus payment of €31.80 is payable if you have been in receipt of an eligible social welfare payment for at least one year directly before you join VTOS

BTEI (Back to Education Initiative)
What is BTEI? The Back To Education Initiative provides part-time Further Education programmes for young people and adults. The aim is to give people an opportunity to combine a return to learning with family, work and other responsibilities.
Who can take part in the BTEI Programme? Anyone who has left full-time education can take part in a course being offered, but priority will be given to those with less than the Leaving Certificate.
What will a BTEI course cost? Individuals will have different entitlements. Those in receipt of unemployment payments or means-tested social welfare benefits, and holders of medical cards, and their dependants, are entitled to free tuition.
What courses are available through BTEI?
There are two main programmes currently offered in Coláiste Dhúlaigh .
Basic Education: The first programme is for adult learners in need of improving their basic skills.
The programme aims at improving the following skills:
- Reading
- Writing
- Numeracy
In addition learners may also have the opportunity to do additional modules in personal and interpersonal skills, art and woodwork.
Some of the modules will lead to FETAC Level 3 accreditation.
General Education:
The Second Programme caters for young people between the ages of 18-21 who left school early.
In this programme learners will be given the opportunity to complete a combination of Leaving Cert subjects, FETAC Level 4 modules and the ECDL.
The programme presently contains the following modules:
- Communications
- Leaving Cert Maths
- Work Experience
- Drama
- ECDL
- Art
In addition learners have the opportunity to do woodwork and art modules. There will also be a number of workshops organised throughout the year on areas of specific interest to the learner such as music etc.
