This course is designed to prepare students for entry to Third Level Art Colleges both in Ireland and abroad. Emphasis is placed on research and development methodologies in both practical and academic subjects relevant to Art and Design practice. This approach facilitates the development of a balanced portfolio which acknowledges the student’s own individual ideas development.
Course Content
Observational research and exploration of ideas and materials through Drawing, Painting, Combined Materials/ Design,Sculpture, Contextual Studies, Digital Photography, Image Processing, Communications, Work Experience, Portfolio Editing and Evaluation.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
WHAT WORK DO YOU NEED TO BRING FOR INTERVIEW FOR A PLACE ON THE ART & DESIGN PORTFOLIO COURSE?
Applicants for this course will be asked to do two observational studies which they will bring with them for interview. Direction on the theme for these studies will be posted out to applicants when they are called for interview.
Students will need to have reached Leaving Certificate standard in English for entry to the course. While preparing their individual portfolio, students on the course cover the FETAC Level 5 Art Award (AAXXX) which is recognised for entry to Third Level Art Colleges such as NCAD, DIT, IADT and ITs nationwide. The Award affords students the opportunity to achieve the equivalent of 400 Leaving Certificate points and Distinction grades can be used in lieu of minimum Leaving Certificate requirements for third level college entry.
The course welcomes mature students who can also avail of the FETAC Award to meet Third Level entry requirements.
Minimum Academic Requirements:
A pass in Leaving Certificate English required.
Mature students are considered on an individual basis.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES/COLLEGE LINKS
The majority of our students take up places in third level colleges such as NCAD, IADT, DIT, Institutes of Technology and Art colleges abroad.
Students can also progress to Higher National Diploma and Degree programmes in Graphic Design, Interior Design, Animation, Architectural Studies and Architectural Technology in Coláiste Dhúlaigh College of Further Education.
